Random Thoughts at the Anti-Mini

“You can’t be serious man, bringing dogs to this race” – Anonymous Runner

“This is not serious and it is not a race.” – Run Director of the Anti-Mini

Number of participants were estimated to be from 250 to 35,010.  My guess was around 300.  In any estimation, it was a lot of people enjoying the day.

Zionsville’s C-Note was the first to finish the 13.1 miles, but in a run like the Anti that doesn’t mean anything.  No awards, no fanfare, just the generous cash reward all finishers receive.  Same with Diann Sutherland, the first lady to finish the full Anti.

Dad really enjoyed being the Grand Marshal.  Taking the bullhorn and yelling “GO!” gave him a feeling of power.  He said it was a joy to tell people to do something and have them actually follow his command.  This said especially after raising five children who would almost never respond to his instructions.

I wore my shoe gloves for the first three laps and then shed them to go barefoot for the last lap.  My feet are not yet tough enough to comfortably handle the gravel parts of the course.

I witnessed only one person tripping on a root and no one getting lost this year.  Our Lost Lady from last year returned for her third Anti and identified herself before the race.  She is a great character and definitely an asset to the event.

The fourth graders from Eagle Elementary were once again very impressive.  I am not sure how many ran, but I know of four who ran the entire 13.1 miles.  Congratulations and well done to all you little guys and gals.

Speaking of munchkins, sixth grader Sam Berger was very fast.  That little guy can run.

Half man half dog Al Logan ran in his fourth Anti and is one of six runners to participate in all of the Antis to date.  Another great Anti character.

Enjoyed meeting the many out-of-town runners.  Several had very nice things to say about the event and plan on returning next year.

A hearty congratulations to all those Z’ville residents who ran the other Mini last weekend.  Special kudos to Sabrina Martin (3rd woman overall), Kari Shultz, age 18 (7th woman overall and new record holder in her age group), JTR, Nuke, Reid and Tharp.

When I returned to the course to do a sweep and remove all the marking ribbons, a Good Samaritan had already done my job for me.  Thank you whoever you are.

Al Smith, Zionsville Park Superintendent, had a new trail cut prior to the run to keep our participants away from the place where the trail had eroded by the creek.  He also had crushed gravel placed over the loose large rocks on the course.  Finally, he had the trail groomed so well that we were able to run two abreast over much of the trail.  A big thank you goes out to Al and his crew as well as the Zionsville Parks Board who allows this event in our parks each year.

With no registration, clip boards were provided for runners to sign-in and record their times as instructed.  According to my estimation seventy-three never signed in.   Twenty signed in but not out (some may still be out on the course so we will do a sweep next week in hopes of finding them).  Eight signed in and put a check mark next to the distance they ran with no time associated with the distance (either they were very fast, very forgetful or very slow and embarrassed).  Four did not sign in, but ran with me so I know they were there.  One did two loops and wrote the time of day (I think) on the recording sheet.  Numerous names and times were illegible and so I make no apologies for the inaccurate names and times below.
